چکیده

We review some of the key tribological issues of relevance to motorsport applications. Tribology is the science of friction and wear, and in a high performance engine, friction and wear are controlled by good component design (e.g. the engine and the transmission) and also by the use of high performance lubricants with the correct physical (and chemical) properties, matched to the machine they are used in. In other words, design of a specific lubricant for specific hardware can lead to optimised performance. (Tribology is also important in the tire-road contact but is not considered here.) The importance of key physical properties of a lubricant is demonstrated with an emphasis on how the choice of the correct lubricant can help to minimize engine friction (and thus increase available power output) whilst protecting against engine wear. Key lubricant parameters discussed in the paper are the viscosity variation of a lubricant with temperature, shear rate and pressure. The relevance of these parameters in controlling oil film thickness and friction in bearings, the piston assembly, and the valve train is demonstrated with examples showing how a high performance engine differs from more conventional engines.

Green tribology: principles, research areas and challenges.

In this introductory paper for the Theme Issue on green tribology, we discuss the concept of green tribology and its relation to other areas of tribology as well as other 'green' disciplines, namely, green engineering and green chemistry. We formulate the 12 principles of green tribology: the minimization of (i) friction and (ii) wear, (iii) the reduction or complete elimination of lubrication,...

Tribological applications of biomaterials: an overview

Tribological research is the study of lubrication, friction, and wear. Tribology of biomaterials is to study how the materials work and fail. This will help us to produce better biomaterials. Tribology plays a very important role in improving the design and making successful biomaterials for medical purposes. Joints of human body, such as hip, knee, jaw, dental parts etc., all need to consider ...

Microscopic study of thin film lubrication and its contributions to macroscopic tribology

This review article summarizes recent progress in investigation of nano-rheology and thin film lubrication, as well as their contributions to conventional tribology. As the thickness of a lubricating film becomes comparable to molecular dimensions, a lubricant confined between solid walls undergoes a dramatic transition in its rheological properties and physical state, including the formation o...

Tribology and total hip arthroplasty implants.

Define tribology and discuss its effect on total hip arthroplasty (THA). Tribology is defined as the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion and includes the principles of friction, lubrication, and wear of implant materials. Tribology of the articulating materials in THA is the most important issue for long-term survival of the implants because the fixation of implants either with o...

Nanotribology and Nanoscale Friction Smooth sliding and modification of frictional characteristics through feedback control

Tribology is the science and technology of interacting solid surfaces in relative motion, and its topics include the study of lubricants, lubrication, friction, wear, and bearings. It is estimated that friction and wear cost the US economy 6% of the gross national product [1]. For example, 5% of the total energy generated in an automobile engine is lost to frictional resistance. Also notable ar...
